Have you got a tired looking lawn?

Lawns can be tricky things! From small bare patches to a lawn that looks like the surface of mars…

These issues can have many causes and most common ones are described below.

At Angry Weeds, we will firstly diagnose the problem(s) then design a plan to repair and renovate your lawn so it gets back to looking its best!.

What are the potential issues?

Nutrient deficiencies – The core nutrients needed for Lawn Health are Nitrogen, Phosphorus & Potassium (NPK). These vital nutrients can become depleted over time when nutrients are removed as grass clippings or other environmental factors.

Soil Health – Soil pH if it becomes too high (acid soil) or too low (alkaline soil) can affect the grasses ability to uptake nutrients. With low nutrient levels or uptake lawn grasses will become discoloured and weak allowing bare patches.

Lawn Disease – Lawn diseases that cause bare patches include brown patchdollar spotfusarium and red thread.

Lawn thatch is the build up of dead matter and debris lying on top of your soil. It’s really surprising how much there actually is and it prevents water and nutrients accessing your grass and soil. You will see a noticeable difference to your lawn when we remove this layer.

This is a very common issue. Compaction occurs naturally over time or may occur because of heavy traffic usage or garden furniture/pools sitting on top of your lawn. In any case, when your soil is compacted it restricts the amount of nutrients to your soil which leads to poor soil health and grass root strength and can also cause severe drainage issues and water pooling. Core Aerating is a great solution to relieving soil compaction.

Weeds – Can take over a lawn very quickly when untreated. Lawns need to be monitored for weeds constantly and treated with a high quality selective herbicide or spot treated with non-selective weed killers.

Lawn pests – lawn pests such as grass grub and porina caterpillar can damage lawn grasses causing bare patches.

Wear and tear  – areas where people or animals walk or run regularly, play areas, areas in and around lawn furniture, etc. Non-hardwearing lawn grasses are more susceptible to wear and tear.

Pet urine – pets, particularly dog, urine can cause dead patches in lawns.

We will firstly diagnose the problem(s) then design a plan to repair and renovate your lawn so it gets back to looking its best!

Some of the solutions are described below. Your lawn may need all or only a couple of the solutions – it all depends on what the issues are. We will assess this when we visit your property (this includes a soil PH & moisture test)  and consult with you to design a renovation plan.

[law_image_box images=”1784″ title=”De-Thatching”]

De-thatching a lawn refers to the mechanical removal of a thatch layer that is too thick. By removing the dead grass & debris it allows your grass to ‘breathe’ and allows more water and nutrients in soil.

[law_image_box images=”1785″ title=”Core Aerating”]

Core aeration mechanically removes plugs or “cores” of soil and thatch from a lawn. Core aeration reduces soil compaction, creating a channel through which oxygen, water, and nutrients can penetrate the soil.

[law_image_box images=”1786″ title=”Weeding”]

Removing weeds from your lawn will keep it in great condition. We use selective herbicides to remove broadleaf weeds and moss/algae which leave the grass unaffected.

[law_image_box images=”1787″ title=”Fertilising”]

Regular light fertilising during the growing season is better than infrequent, heavy fertilising. We use organic fertilisers that gently feeds all lawn types and will improve the structure, colour and moisture retention of the soil.

[law_image_box images=”1788″ title=”Over seeding”]

Over-seeding is essentially spreading grass seed over an existing lawn. As grasses mature, thinning is normal and if done right, over-seeding can hugely enhance and thicken up your lawn.

[law_image_box images=”1789″ title=”Top dressing”]

Top dressing your lawn adds organic matter to the topsoil which improves soil structure and water holding capacity. By top dressing we can also smooth out uneven areas in your lawn.

Sometimes the fastest way to remove and level a lawn is to physically remove the sod layer by cutting it into strips with a sod cutter, rolling the strips up, and taking them away.
